Always Look On The Bright Side of Life

When I'm in one of my deepest of deepest pits of depression, it's fucking hard, if not damn near impossible, to look at the bright side of life. I fell into one of those fucking pits over the weekend. Too much shit hit the proverbial fan, while tearing away at me like I was made of third grade toilet tissue. Normally, I'm fine with one crappy event dropping down on top of me like a two ton load of elephant dung. But not too fine when a succession of things hit me from all directions.

So this is what I have to do:

I have to step back, find a quiet place and muster all of my inner strength to find peace. Once I find that peace, I can clear my mind. Once I've done that, I can put things in their proper perspective. When I've achieved this, I can take it one step at a time and eventually recover from any bad feelings and work on the problem at hand. It's either that or go on a killing spree or worse.

When a string of bad to horrible happenstances keep pummeling you to the ground, so to speak, it's best that you try to step back inside your mind, maybe laugh at the sheer insanity of life and people in this world and attempt to realize you only have this one life to live and things may not be as bad as they seem.

That is, unless you're locked up somewhere with a lunatic who is cutting off your body parts, piece by piece. Then you're pretty much screwed.

In most cases, however, it is possible to find something to give you peace of mind, no matter how bleak things seem to be. Even if you can't always look on the bright side of life, you can, with inner persistence, find a glimmer of light in the dark woods of hopelessness. And once you find it, you'll find yourself at the beginning of a path leading to a life worth living again.

This video clip and scene from Life of Brian always makes me laugh. It's always been one of my favorite scenes from any movie. I mean, here they all are, being crucified on their crosses, yet they're singing this happy little ditty of a song. It's absurd, just like life and death are, if you think about it, yet they're all just whistling and singing away.

And why the hell not? It beats dwelling in the pits of depression. Play it and sing along, won't you?

Voted the greatest comedy film of all time by the British public. When it came out, it was denounced as blasphemous by quite a few religious types. A bishop in a long purple frock appeared in a TV debate with two of the Pythons. He was almost as funny as the film.

I know where you're at, love. I hope you find peace soon. I hope you can see the bright side again soon.

Love to you.

My way out of depression is to get OUT of my own brain. Too much goes on in there. I have to get physical and pay attention to the external. By physical I mean, see what I am doing. Feel. Hear. Be present.

"Lifes a piece of shit
When you look at it".
I,too, love this song and sequence from the film. It's completely absurd of course but somewhere in there lies a basic truth; you might as well smile because there ain't much you can do about it!
Good luck Kelly - things can only get better.

Kelly, this is what Sir Tom does in a situation like this:
Close your eyes and imagine all of the chaps and gals who are pissing you off lined up against a wall.
Look down at you feet. Good heavens! Someone has carelessly left an Uzi sub-machine gun laying around (It fires 600 rounds-per-minute. Don't ask.)
You pick the gun up and wipe them all out. Permanently. Feel better now? Attaboy!

Hi Kelly,
I love this song from The Life of Brian. I actually sing it sometimes spontaneously for a cathartic rush. I also like to sing, "make'em laugh" with Donald O'Connor in Singing in The Rain. Dozes of blindingly bright sunlight work for me too. Stay well, Kelly. You are not alone. P.S. I really liked your writing in this post, especially the toilet paper image. I could sense disintegration, but then you followed it up with that spectacular photo in the woods. It made me smile.

Hi Kelly,
I'm sure that verbalising your feelings has given you a measure of comfort. I know how hard it can be to distance ourselves from negative thoughts and influences.
Positive distractions, as you so well know, are vital in working through the dark clouds of depression.
Now, I promise, this is not a self-promotion statement. I did a blog on that very song from the hilariously satirical 'Life of Brian'. I rather tongue in cheek renamed the song, 'Always Look On The 'Shite' Side of Life'. I was reflecting on a negative past that I would do utmost to not dominate by generally positive now.
Stay strong buddy. You have my ongoing support and encouragement.
In kindness and empathy, Gary :-)

Gorilla Bananas- As well it should be. I remember when the hard core Catholics and religious leaders went nutty over the film. What a bunch of uptight assholes they were! Another favorite Python song of mine is the "Every Sperm is Sacred" song from "Meaning of Life". Brilliant fun for one and all!

MarytrMom- So true... so true. lol. And now I shall cut a most blessed fart. Let us pray.

Gucci Mama- (((Stephanie))) Thank you for your words of understanding and kindness. Your support means a lot. I've started to feel better these last couple of days. At least I'm trying. Take care.

middle child- What you say there makes sense. I know that my mood is improving when I'M ABLE to take the steps you're talking about. When I get too low, I'm stagnate, dwelling in the god awful pit of depression. Anyway, I'm feeling better and I thank you for commenting. Take good care.

bazza- Hahaha... You just named off my favorite lines from the song. And thanks for wishing me luck. I value all support from the blogging community.

THE SNEE- Both those songs are great, I agree. They're inspirational in their own ways, really. I envy your ability to sing them. I would sing them, as well, but...

1) I don't know the words, entirely

and...

2) My annoyingly loud warbling (which I call my singing... If you can call it that) would enrage the neighbors to a point where I would be lynched from our town's Christmas tree. Essentially, I'd be a blue-face human Christmas ornament.

Thank you for telling me I'm not alone and for cheering me up even further. I value your support. Glad I made you smile. Take care!

klahanie- You've more than adequately described how it is with depression and you're right about verbalizing my feelings on the blog, too. Most of the time, when I vent about whatever is bothering me, I do get a fair amount of relief from it. I appreciate your support, Gary.

I like how you renamed the song in a past post. That title is just as accurate, too... especially in regards to reflecting on negative "shitty" past events in your life. For that matter, it could apply to most everyone.

Take care, man. I'll be at your site and everyone else's here soon. I gotta lot of catching up to do.

Hmm...Kelly, maybe I should have said, "sing along", hum or make up the lyrics I'm not familiar with..lol.

Kelly said...

THE SNEE- Alrighty then... I will hum it and make up the lyrics, simultaneously. Quite a trick, I admit, but you just wait and see... I'll do it and then I'll be famous and celebrated around the world for my wondrous talent and... well... I may be just a little delusional. lol.
